Olympic National Park visitation rises in 2011 over previous year

Visitation at Kalaloch was up 396 percent from December 2010 and is attributed to boosting the park's overall recreation visits for the month by 22 percent. Total visits in December were 78846. In December 2010, visits totaled 65092.
 

Bremerton mountain rescue group help in two recent rescues

Although OMR members primarily cover the Olympic National Park because it's "practically in our backyard," members help out with rescue missions anywhere in the state, he said. Sometimes, they even get called out on missions to Oregon.

Olympic National Park Washington Beach Hike Day Four


Olympic National Park Washington Coastal strip No fewer than 150 ships have met an untimely fate along the Washington coast, a big chunk of which is taken up by Olympic National Park. The 62-mile shoreline is renowned for its storm-tossed ocean, and to walk it is to feel the sobering power of surf, fog, and waves. Your daily companions might be gray whales, bald eagles, sea otters, and sea lions, but at night, huddled around a driftwood campfire, you'll likely feel the presence of something else: ghosts. GAME PLAN: Among the beach-hiking cognoscenti, the 23 wild miles between Cape Alava and Rialto Beach hold a certain attraction: sea stacks, tide pools, lazing seals, and none of the elevation change you'll find up in the mountains. But that hardly means the trek is, ahem, a walk in the park. Scrambling over headlands is hard, slippery work, while walking around them might mean waiting on a tide change. You'll need three full days at least. From the Ozette Ranger Station, start for the coast on a three-mile boardwalk that cuts through a boggy forest of western hemlock and western red cedars. At Cape Alava, scope for migrating gray whales (in the spring and fall), then turn south. The going is easy at first—about a mile in, keep an eye out for Wedding Rocks, which are covered in petroglyphs—but gets trickier after Yellow Banks, with a four-mile run of slick boulders and ankle-deep gravel.
